"Dear Rod,
I know your article tries to provoke. After all it's your job to try
to sell as much as possible. However, in doing so you overgeneralize
and indeed mislead your readers. Is Greece a siesta place? Statistics
show that Greeks in the private sector work longer hours than in
Germany or the UK. Is the public mood in Greece inclined to do
nothing? All polls show the vast majority of Greeks feel ashamed,
guilty, and are willing to accept heavy sacrifices, to pay back public
debt. Is Greece a holiday heaven for 'lower-class people' as you call your compatriots craving for cheap alcohol? Not more so than any other tourism destination. The hundreds of five star hotels developed in Greece during the last decade, the successful Olympics of 2004, and the average revenues per hotel room, show a dynamically growing Greek upmarket tourism sector. As about the look in the eyes of the waitor in Faliraki, I would have thought, it much more resembles the double standards of your judgement. You tried to produce a provocative article, but by being partial, you produced, I am afraid, a sad piece of bad journalism.
Sincerely yours,
Andreas A. Andreadis
President,
Hellenic Hotel Federation"
